Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex

  • The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) is a world-renowned space tracking station located in Tidbinbilla, just outside Canberra. Operated by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in collaboration with NASA’s Deep Space Network, CDSCC plays a crucial role in tracking and communicating with spacecraft exploring the solar system and beyond. Since its establishment in 1965, the complex has been involved in historic space missions, including Apollo 11’s Moon landing, the Voyager spacecraft’s interstellar journey, and Mars rover missions.
  • One of the standout features of CDSCC is its massive radio antennas, which receive signals from spacecraft millions or even billions of kilometers away. The largest dish, known as Deep Space Station 43 (DSS-43), is 70 meters in diameter, making it the biggest steerable parabolic antenna in the Southern Hemisphere. These antennas play a vital role in NASA’s exploration efforts, relaying scientific data and images from missions like the James Webb Space Telescope, Perseverance Rover on Mars, and New Horizons probe that flew past Pluto.
  • Visitors to CDSCC can explore its Visitor Centre, which offers interactive exhibits, space artifacts, and real-time mission tracking. The exhibits showcase spacecraft models, moon rocks, and a history of deep space exploration, providing a fascinating insight into humanity’s quest to explore the cosmos. The centre also features a café with views of the giant antennas, allowing visitors to enjoy a meal while watching these impressive structures in action.
  • Beyond its role in supporting deep space missions, CDSCC is a key player in Australia’s space industry and scientific research. It collaborates with international space agencies and researchers to advance our understanding of the universe. Whether you're a space enthusiast, a science lover, or just curious about how we communicate with spacecraft across the galaxy, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is a must-visit destination that connects Earth to the vastness of space.
